Hybrid Working: The IT Gaps Nobody Plans For

Most businesses moved to hybrid working quickly, without ever going back to check what it actually did to their IT setup. Here is what usually gets missed.

Hybrid working happened fast for most small businesses, and it happened as a series of quick decisions rather than a plan. Someone got a laptop so they could work from home on Fridays. Someone else started dialling into meetings from a personal phone. None of it was wrong exactly, but very few businesses ever went back afterwards to check what all those small decisions added up to.

The office network stops being the whole picture

When everyone worked from one location, your office network was effectively your entire IT perimeter. Once staff are working from home, from client sites, or from a laptop on a train, that is no longer true, and a setup that was built around one location does not automatically extend to cover the rest.

This is where Network Support Services stops being just about the office wiring and starts needing to account for how people actually connect from wherever they are.

A device leaving the building changes the risk entirely

A laptop sitting in a locked office overnight and a laptop sitting in a car, a train seat, or a home that other people also have access to, are not the same risk, even if it is exactly the same device running exactly the same software. Encryption, remote lock, and the ability to wipe a device that goes missing all matter far more once devices are regularly leaving the building.

Endpoint Devices management exists specifically for this, keeping every device centrally visible and protected regardless of where it physically is on any given day.

Files end up split across more places than anyone realises

A file saved locally on a home laptop, a version emailed to a personal address to work on over a weekend, another copy sitting in a personal cloud account because it was the fastest way to share something at the time. None of this happens out of carelessness. It happens because the proper shared system was not quite convenient enough in the moment, and a slightly easier workaround was.

A properly set up Microsoft Office 365 environment, with shared storage that is genuinely as easy to use as the workaround, is usually what actually stops this pattern rather than a policy asking people not to do it.

Backups that quietly stopped covering everyone

If your backup strategy was built when everyone worked from office desktops, it may still only be backing up what sits on the office network, not what is stored locally on a home laptop or a device that rarely connects back to the office at all. This is one of the most common gaps we find, because nothing about it looks broken until the day a device is lost or fails.

Our Cloud Backup service is built around this specifically, covering devices and data wherever they actually are, not just wherever they used to be.

Getting started

The useful exercise is not assuming hybrid working is covered because nothing has gone wrong yet. It is actually listing where your data and your devices are right now, today, and checking that against what your IT setup was originally built to protect.
